OCBC launches ringgit savings for Singapore customers, a first for a non-Malaysian bank

OCBC began offering ringgit savings in its Global Savings Account and Premier Global Savings Account from October 23, saying it is the first non-Malaysian bank to let customers hold the currency in a Singapore-based personal savings account. Customers can hold up to RM50,000 and earn interest on it, taking the account to 11 currencies.

Why it matters: The ringgit is tightly controlled and not internationalised, so a Singapore deposit product for it is unusual, and OCBC says Malaysia already accounts for one in three of its customers’ overseas transactions. With the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link expected to increase cross-causeway travel, the move takes on multi-currency wallets and travel cards in one of the region’s busiest consumer corridors.
